Bringing South Europe to Esbjerg, Denmark: The Krebsehusene Project
South Europe in Esbjerg, Denmark? You might find it hard to believe, but a small part of Southern Europe thrives in the heart of Esbjerg. Krebsehusene, consisting of 76 senior homes surrounded by two 600 square meter glass-covered atrium courtyards filled with green plants, trees and palms, is a unique housing development that offers a taste of the Mediterranean in Denmark.
Krebsehusene: A slice of Southern Europe in Esbjerg
Nestled in Esbjerg, Claus Sørensen Ejendomme has constructed 76 homes for seniors, located amidst picturesque surroundings with a healthcare center and a medical clinic in close proximity. What truly sets Krebsehusene apart are the two sprawling atrium courtyards, each spanning over 600 square meters. These courtyards are adorned with a diverse collection of plants, palms, petanque courts, and cozy nooks. They provide a warm and inviting environment where residents can gather, socialize, and enjoy the beauty of nature all year round.
Guidance from Inception: Palmproject Europe
Palmproject Europe was instrumental in this project from the early stages. Our role included offering expert guidance on plant selection, irrigation systems, soil composition, lighting, and rainwater recycling. We advised on which “seeds” to sow first in terms of plants and irrigation systems. We recommended plants that contribute to the desired Southern European ambiance while ensuring a cozy and varied landscape with plants of varying heights, suitable for the different atrium roof heights.
Our dedicated procurement team handpicked the plants, palms, and trees that would become integral to the Krebsehusene project, guaranteeing the right style, size, and aesthetic from the outset.
Proper lighting is essential, both for the plants and for creating the perfect ambiance. Plant lighting complements the natural light, ensuring that the plants thrive even during the winter months. Additionally, we suggested decorative lighting solutions like “uplighting” for the plants, which adds a delightful touch, and evening and nighttime illumination with lanterns and posts in the courtyards.
Plant Care at Krebsehusene
Our commitment extended beyond initial guidance and procurement. We aimed to ensure that the atrium courtyards remain green and vibrant for years to come, not just during the first year. In Denmark we use Jydsk Planteservice as our servicepartner. Today, their skilled gardeners are responsible for plant maintenance at Krebsehusene, ensuring that the plants continue to flourish.

What Are Krebsehusene?
Krebsehusene is a visionary project by Claus Sørensen Ejendomme. It represents a senior-friendly development in Esbjerg, set amidst picturesque surroundings. These 76 homes encircle two expansive atrium courtyards filled with plants, palms, and relaxation and activity areas. Additionally, Krebsehusene is conveniently located on either side of a newly constructed healthcare center, providing residents with access to essential medical facilities.
The concept behind Krebsehusene is to create protected communities where residents can gather with family, friends, and neighbors, and enjoy the plants and nature without worrying about the weather. The abundant greenery also plays a crucial role in enhancing the well-being of the residents.
